Our Aim

At The Brooksbank School, we aim to prepare our students to become work ready in order to enable them to be successful and independent upon leaving education. This supports social mobility by improving opportunities for all young people, especially those from a disadvantaged background and those with special educational needs and disabilities.

We are dedicated to providing an inclusive, effective and ambitious careers strategy which raises student aspirations, unlocks their potential and ensures that they have the individual skills, values and qualifications to make informed choices and be successful in further education, training and employment.

It is our belief that every learner should have the relevant opportunities to learn about the world of work, employ-ability skills and the personal qualities that are valued in the workplace in order to increase the self-confidence of students and raise aspirations.

All our students have access to the Careers Resource Centre where they will find support and guidance, literature and resources to aid them in making well-informed decisions about their future. The Careers Co-ordinator works closely with our independent Careers Advisers from Calderdale and Kirklees Careers to ensure impartiality.

We have achieved the Quality in Careers by implementation of the Gatsby Benchmarks to ensure that careers provision is of the highest quality for students.

The Careers Advice and Guidance Team:

Our fully qualified and experienced careers advisors provide impartial, detailed confidential advice to help and support our students with making choices.

One to one guidance or group sessions are available at key points in a student’s school career to help in making decisions for KS4, Post 16 choices and Post 18, as well as aiding application for work-based learning or training.

The Careers Team and careers resources are based in the LRC. The careers area has the same opening times as the LRC.

C & K Careers have also developed My Directions which provides all our young people with the information they need to make decisions about the future.

Each user has their own unique login and password and will access careers information tailored to their age and interests. Designed for use by young people in Year 7 up to the age of 19, MyDirections includes articles relevant to all the different stages of career planning. In addition, local events and opportunities are advertised on the website’s home page, outside of the login and password.

As well as providing factual information, MyDirections also encourages young people to think about careers they may not have thought of, by linking the subjects they have selected to a wide range of careers and courses. Useful websites related to the sectors and subjects they have chosen, enables users to undertake further detailed research should they want to.

In addition to tailored content, MyDirections also includes articles about general topics – for example, using labour market information, choosing qualifications and attending a careers event. A CV builder is available to all users and job search articles cover everything from where to look for vacancies, through to starting your first job or apprenticeship. Information about how a young person can contact their careers adviser is prominent on every page.

High Quality Provision

Brooksbank school has achieved The Quality in Careers Standard in recognition of our commitment to providing the highest possible standard of Careers education, information, advice and guidance.

This was achieved on 6th August 2019 and the next review of our provision will be on 6th August 2022.

quality

The Quality in Careers Standard is the single national quality award for careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) in schools, colleges and work-based learning.
All state-funded secondary schools are “strongly recommended” by the Department for Education in its Statutory Guidance to work towards, achieve, and maintain this national Standard as part of its ‘careers strategy’.

The Standard is fully aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks for “Good Career Guidance” and complies with the DfE’s Statutory Guidance.

As England’s dedicated national quality award, the Quality in Careers Standard – through external assessment – uniquely accredits the four components of the CEIAG:
1. Careers Education
2. Careers Information
3. Careers Advice
4. Careers Guidance

Provider Access Policy

Our Careers Programme

Our programme has been designed to help our students to become more self-reliant and better able to manage their personal and career development. By providing access to a range of careers education activities and interventions it provides opportunities to find out about the local and national labour market, regular employer engagement within the curriculum, as well the opportunity to access 1-to-1 guidance from a Level 6 qualified careers adviser.

It has a constant focus on ambitious aspirations for every learner, ensuring all our learners are given opportunities and experiences that open their eyes to exciting new pathways, partnered with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in the future world of work.

The programme promotes equal opportunities and challenges stereotypical thinking and attitudes. It helps students, including disadvantaged students and students with special educational needs and disabilities to overcome any overt and/or hidden barriers to progress that they may encounter and ensures that all students receive appropriate information and guidance, especially at key decision and transition points.

It is differentiated and personalised to ensure progression through activities that are appropriate to students’ stages of career learning, planning and development. The careers programme includes career sessions, career guidance activities (group work and individual interviews), information and research and other outside agency intervention.

Our programme gives students:

The opportunity to take an active part in their career learning at multiple stages of their education
Access to useful information through local and national employers and the ability to network with prospective employers to improve future career prospects
An understanding of how their subjects at school link with the world of work and the importance of both employability skills and qualifications when entering the work force

How we assess the impact, outcomes and effectiveness of the careers program, careers guidance and education.

We use internally and externally produced reports to assess the impact of our careers education, information, advice and guidance. These include:

Fully comprehensive analysis of the destinations of KS4 and KS5 students,
evaluate progression and provide analysis to inform CEIAG programme
benchmark across schools and LA area
compare destinations of student Premium students to those of the overall cohort and non-student Premium students
Provide analysis of student satisfaction using the Year 11 survey
End of term reports
Impact of Guidance biannual student survey
We also use :

the Careers and Enterprise Company Compass tool to evaluate our provision and assess whether we are meeting the 8 recommended Gatsby Benchmarks. This report is run every term.

Apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, experience a real work environment whilst completing industry recognised qualifications. Staying in learning until your 18 doesn’t have to mean staying on in 6th form or going to college. With over 400 different types of apprenticeships in a variety of industries there is plenty to choose from, allowing you to be hand’s on and develop your skills and knowledge in the workplace. Higher and degree apprenticeships continue to grow making this route a viable alternative to higher education and without the student debt. Legal, teaching, health, engineering, finance and many other professions are now achievable through an apprenticeship programme.

At The Brooksbank School we work hard to prepare students to make a successful transition to the world of work and to raise the profile of work-based opportunities both post-16 and 18. We are proud to have the highest numbers of young people across schools in Calderdale progressing into apprenticeship destinations, both after Year 11 and Year 13. In 2018, 28 Year 11 leavers moved into apprenticeship positions in a variety of different areas including, construction, engineering, dental nursing, the armed forces, sport and many more. Our sixth formers also secured some amazing opportunities, 12 individuals began their careers with companies such as Mercedes, the NHS and BASF and also in legal firms, accountancy, childcare and the media.
