Year 7 youngster Saif Ali has been crowned Brooksbank’s Chess Champion for 2019. He is the youngest student to win the title. Saif, who is in 7T, beat rival Dominic Taylor, in 8N, in a thrilling final. The two other finalists were Blake Wood, in 8D, and Alex Solomon in 11U.
Saif, whose favourite chess piece is the knight, is a big fan of the strategy board game and plays every weekend with his uncle. We wanted to know his top tip for winning. “Always play like it’s a game,” he replied, cryptically.
Judging by our four finalists, chess is a family thing. Dominic’s older brother plays the game at national level while Blake believes his great-grandfather used to make chess sets for a living.
Around fifty entrants took part in Brooksbank’s long-running tournament, which begins every January in the LRC.
“Winning at such a young age is fantastic!” says Mrs Ellis, LRC Manager. “Looking back at previous winners – which include a four-time winner and a three-time winner – Saif is well placed to become a five-time winner!” No pressure, Saif; and congratulations on your fantastic victory. May your knights continue to prevail!
